Wrens Fledge

Just a few days again so comfortable and dependent. Now they are out of the next and are having a hard time figuring out how to get out from under the deck. They have tried out all the furniture, been in all the plants, in all the windows, climbed the walls and on the shelves. Mom and Dad were trying so hard to get them out in the open, one went right away. I don't know how long it took the other two, I stopped watching.

Baby Bluebird Saved

We saved a baby that fell from a nest on Memorial Day in May and now she is thriving. We have some great pics from 2 days old and up.

Find the Wren's Nest

The wrens have built a nest in the flower arrangement before but I had never gotten any pictures of them here. The babies are hard to see. They are tucked way in the back against the house. The adult wren is very quick at getting in to the babies with a bug and then off to get another.

Mom would get some shelled sunflower seeds from the feeder and take them to this tree to feed the baby. There were two babies day before yesterday and yesterday, but I only see the one today.

For the last few days I haven't seen any signs of the chickadees at the house they had worked so hard on. I was thinking they had abandoned the project or something tragic had happened to the eggs or babies. Well, today I finally see them adding a bit more dog fur to the nest. Interesting! If I'm not mistaken, the furball in the chickadee's mouth is from the husky next door. Resourceful little guys, aren't they. In my reading about my new feathered neighbors, I learned that both chickadees build the nest, both incubate the eggs, and both feed the babies. Chickadees are my kind of birds. Contrast this to the hummingbird - where the female builds the nest, incubates the eggs, and feeds the young. Poor girl!

The new bird house I bought has been chosen by chickadees for my first babies of the Spring. Stay tuned for more pictures. The shot with the nandinas in the entrance was yesterday when they were finalizing their choice. This morning I cleared the entrance and they began moving right in. How exciting! The titmouse is fun to watch. When he chooses a small seed he will hold it in his feet and eat it. When he chooses a large nut he flies off to eat it, or maybe share, I don't really know what he does with it. I have not really seen that yet.

PS For the squirrel lovers - I am one too. My squirrels even have names. They must enjoy this and it can't hurt to land as they have done it about 4oo times - today! When he lands, he looks to see if I am watching and gives me a little "I meant to do that" smirk as he runs back up the tree to try again.
