Baby and Momma Red-bellied Woodpecker

Mom would get some shelled sunflower seeds from the feeder and take them to this tree to feed the baby. There were two babies day before yesterday and yesterday, but I only see the one today.

He/she is not old enough to dye his hair red yet! : )

Tim Rescues Hairy!

Yesterday we had this hairy woodpecker hit our window at the store.  Tim went out and nursed him back to health.

Lynda's Suet Eaters

Here are some of the birds I've taken pics of eating my suet.  I just recently made some balls of suet and have been putting them in the Bluebirds meal worm dish.  They seem to like that as well as the cage. (from left to right, Carolina Wren, Grackle, Mockingbird, Red bellied Woodpecker, White breasted Nuthatch, Starling, Bluebird, Downy Woodpecker, bunch of Bluebirds, Carolina Chickadee and Bluebird, House Finch, Pine Warbler, Cardinal and Tufted Titmouse)  Lynda

Downey or Hairy Woodpecker, I still can't tell the difference!

He let me walk up pretty close, plus I had the zoom lens on my camera. He must have been really hungry or he's just used to me being around.
Susan, could we get
that napkin back please? : )

My Crepe Myrtle, No, Mine

Sherri's cardinal seems to be telling the wee woodpecker to move along. They are probably enjoying the billions of seeds that are in the crepe myrtle flower seed pods.

Last Poll Winner

Our last poll topic was your favorite guests to your backyard feeders. The woodpecker edged out the bluebirds and cardinals - but it was very close.

This shot is a male Red-Bellied Woodpecker from Susan's garden in Sharpsburg.

Please take a moment to vote in our new poll about gifts you would prefer from the WBCPTC.

Thank you for visiting. Please send your photos to us and watch for them to appear here in our blog!

As always, click on the picture to see a larger image.

Woodpecker Takes the Lead

In honor of the woodpecker taking the lead in our opinion poll, I would like to post my newest guest to my feeders, the red-headed woodpecker. Isn't this a beautiful bird!

In honor of the woodpecker taking the lead as our favorite backyard visitor, I want to post my most recent addition to my backyard guests - my red-headed woodpecker. Isn't this a magnificent bird?!?!

Red-Headed Woodpeckers

The Red-headed woodpecker is a frequent visitor to my feeders, but today was the first time I saw the young red-headed woodpecker (for sure, I wondered if I was seeing it before but could not tell for sure). The adult would get a sunflower seed from the feeder and take it up to the tree where the young bird was waiting. The adult then cracked the seed and fed the young bird, How much fun to watch!! Same Feeder - Different Yard

Betsy's (PTC) red-belly woodpecker also loves the platform feeder. He seems to be enjoying peanuts, sunflower meats and seeds, pumpkin seeds, and dried cherries - WBC's Woodpecker Wise. Lucky bird!

Lazy Woodpecker

Lazy Red-Bellied Woodpecker ... used to eat the cardinal mix, but finds the shelled sunflower seeds much easier to eat! Look, he can get 5 or 6 in his mouth at a time.
